A Restroom w/ a View: Next Book

完整标题是:HARD NOT TO STRAY, ESPECIALLY IN A RESTROOM WITH A VIEW。希望明年能弄出来。没有能力拍别的了,只能偷偷拍每天上班的楼层里的那个厕所,这是一个尝试,以编成一本画册为目标拍,这是另一个尝试。

[Updated, Apr 24] 基本定稿,过几天就可以印一本正式的出来了。从开始编辑以来共试印了五次。

第一本是草稿的草稿,直接把72点的图堆进去,90页不到,骑马钉,$2.29。寄丢了(2月21日寄出,现在还没到),但我也不急;我一心想看的是胶订的效果,因为从来没试过。

胶订样本不能免费,所以挑了20页凑满最小页数;这是印的第二本,$6.94。收到后手里掂掂,到底是胶订,纸也明显厚,虽然只有20页,比我在那里印的所有骑马订都神气,想象90页应该是蛮象样的一本。头一次看到自己胶订的实样,可以比较方便地确定装订处吃掉的尺寸,所以微调了模板,微调了所有页面,调整了几张图避开装订的限制,跨页图也全部裁开。然后信心满满地开始全部扫描、校色。

第三本,主要看图片编排(这是第一本没有完成的任务)和图片处理,所以还是省钱选了骑马订,还特别加了几个临时页测试黑白图像、文字尺寸、底纹和锐化。$2.29,90多页,还真不算薄了,虽然纸很薄。比对着印刷结果重新调整了1/3图像的暗部和锐化,重新处理了黑白图(后面细说)。

再有节制地奢侈了一下,印了第四本,测试图像调整后的效果;8页,$1.07。然后整个事情丢开冷了几天,偶尔打开文件调整几张图的秩序,同时对付文字。其间还把朋友的绘画和摄影排了一本,16页,$1.25。

图片和编排全部搞定,文字也基本搞定,昨天收到第五本;92页,$2.29。图片全无问题,文字排版做了些微调,书脊早已做好,明天请朋友再过一遍文字内容,应该可以正式印胶订的了。

目前为止一共花了$14.88。


黑白图片。我以前没认真印过,这次发现Grayscale模式印出来会偏红。还好立刻想到Photoshop里的Tuotone模式,我随手选了预设的“green 349 bl 4”,然后把模式转成RGB。印出来效果很好,终于是黑白照片的感觉了,而且墨色浓浓的。[后来在日光色温下看,绿色太明显了,可能应该挑选另一种淡到难以觉察到预设;我现在是把所有的已经转绿的,整幅减了饱和度,-40。效果要印了再看。]

锐化或者说“大图缩小”。以前和Helen谈起过;这次我体会到这个看法还是对的:大图缩小,问题是没有,但质量(锐度)是会下降的。最精致的做法,还是应该根据最终的版面,到Ps里去把图像缩小到最终需要尺寸并锐化。我这次是图片太多,135的拍摄质量又不好,就偷了懒,只是有选择地对某几张图加大了锐化。

Few people know what they look like from behind. If so, this book, comprised of portraits depicted from behind, might be worth to see as mirrors in a fitting room.

The photographs here were selected from my work of 2003-07. For some ones, I do not remember exactly what I was thinking at the moments. All these photographs, however, show the evidence that I have been attracted to all these figures, and some of them even remain so much power for me that motivate me to make this collection.

I tend to define this album as a coffee table book, from which readers, including me, hardly expect a meeting with a conceptual ambition. I would like to share an experience that is similar to casual reading. On the tough process of sequencing, scanning and dust removing, I was repeatedly staring at the back-posed portraitures and fine details without any expectation, sometimes seeing nothing, sometimes seeing something behind what I looked at.

没人知道自己的背影是什么样子的。所以,全是背影的这本书,可以被看做试衣间里的多面镜子。

这本书里的照片选自我2003-07年的作品。有些我已经不记得拍摄当时的具体想法了。但是,所有这些照片都证明我曾被这些形象吸引过,其中有些始终保持着强大的吸引力,以致促使我编出这本影集。

我觉得这影集应该被当作一本厕上书来看,读者,包括我,都无须准备面对观念的意蕴。我有一种和闲翻闲看很类似的体验:在苦苦地排序、扫描和修脏点的时候,我反复盯着这些背影和细节,心不在焉;有时候什么都没看见,有时候又会看到背影的背面。

The selection of photographs adopted all from the shoot of mine in July 2003 that the impulsion of shooting I already disambiguated now. However, the rest of memory survived shows how attractive of all these figures which keep influencing me, and jumping into this little book.

Intently,to me or the readers, skimming as a album of leisure will be appreciated,such as the coffee time without any mental afford.Me also got the similar experience during the editing part which means when I was scanning, sequencing and dust-removing it’s presented a kind of woolgathering same as my aspiration where the book to be situated. One rarely cares about how one’s back looks like. This collection – entitled ‘Back’ might be regarded as looking-glasses in a fitting room.

The photos in this book are chozen from my works between 2003 and 2007, some of the inspirations behind them are vague in my mind now. However, these photos are evidence of how much I was once attracted to these sights and figures and their prolonged power over me has prompted the birth of the present album.

Flip through the pages at leisure, my dear reader. I have the similar experience when I was scanning, sorting out the sequence, and removing some spots on these photos – I absent-mindedly went through the procedures, sometimes staring at details, sometimes wandering in my own imagination, and sometimes even seeing something behind these backs!

Seldom people knows about how he looks like on his back. Therefore, this book of photographs shooting from people’s behind could be regarded as mirrors in the fitting room.

The pictures in this book were selected from my works between 2003 to 2007, some ideas of them while shooting has been forgotten now in detail. However, all these pictures show that I was attracted by these figures, some of which keep exciting me all the time, and urging me to comprise this book.

I suggest that readers might treat this album as a coffee table book like me, no need to consider of any conception or meaning. I have this kind of leisure reading experience myself- while working hard on scanning, sequencing and dust repairing, I kept staring at these backs and details, absent-minded, sometimes no perspective, yet sometimes going behind those backs.

[Updated, Mar 28] 再嘚吧一些。这些天,扫描、校色就像坐在流水线上,几年的self-training也算出效益了。我去年开始利用Silverfast的HDR/Raw功能,把扫描仪的扫和对预览图的调整分离开来,扫的时候只做框选这一个动作,扫描速度快许多;甚至扫120的时候,半篇网文都没看全要起身换片了。扫描仪速度快也是一大幸运;V750比它曾祖父3200感觉上要快2/3。再一个,这次下了很大的决心:只扫这本书够用的分辨率;绝大部分在700到2000点之间,个别跨页大图才扫到3600点。

由于图小,要擦的脏点也少了。现在邦迪用熟练了,很少用图章。手指还是有点疼。

说到校色了。沿用了四、五年的方法,突然从去年开始改变,我开始用Photoshop的自动命令。当然,只是做法不同了而已,中性灰的思路没有改变;能看见人行道上有阳光的温度,对我来说是很重要的愉快。

封面换了。原来的封面图(现在放在第64页)是刚有念头时,作为试验扔上去的。我非常喜欢这张照片;在后来的过程中也从没重新考虑过封面。今天女儿说太闷了,作为封面,她觉得应该用more attractive的图。我有点闷闷不乐,又没有灵机一动的方案。我问老婆,老婆马上提到现在这张;这是她头一次看全本的时候就说喜欢的一张。女儿今天收到Parsons的录取材料了。


[Updated, Mar 27] 全部120张图扫完修完。天天看看木了,不晓得编排上还要不要动。先印proof,免费的只能骑马订,至少可以看一看图片质量和编排;跨页大图中间的空隙是对付perfect binding的。楼上的PDF更新了。


Vincent在Google Reader上问我,“这个标题的implicature是什么?”这个还真没有。最初随手用过“Back(Backs)”。现在说behind,就是“从后面拍的”意思;如果有人喜欢想象出那人的正面,他就是看到了此刻这个形象的“后面”(behind the figure?);这算是implicature吗?

前一阵排到一半时和朋友在网上说话,整理一下:

z:只要看个高矮胖瘦往版面里扔就行了,从来没这么爽过。我叫它coffee table photo book。我这次是解放了一大批废片。

c: 怎么是废片呢?

z:单看是废片,排起来就不同了。这道理是老生常谈,但从没真的体会过。因为从来拍这些片都是单张思维的。也没有受过专题的教育和训练。

c: 好看的。不过扔完以后,我觉得是不是还要再精简一下?

z: 精简就会露馅儿,或者说授人以柄,会要求你编排的意思。我花很大功夫来避免意思。因为本来就没意思。

c: 有意思啊,狠有意思啊。

z: 而且做不到真的“乱”排来避免意思。

c: 所以还是有意思嘛。既然有意思了,索性再有意思点咯。

z: 我是用给意思来避免意思,比如,拿包的就拍在一起,老头的就排在一起,高低成弧线的就排在一起。

c: 看出来啦。

z: 但是,根本上是没意思的,老实话,所以就不能往意思那方面走。当然,突然冒出来意思也有可能。但至今还没有。

c: 什么样的量不让人视觉疲劳,持续保持阅读兴趣和新鲜感? 刚才翻的时候有几页我的视觉不愿意停留,大部分还是觉得有意思。这是我说要精简的意思。不过,我只是读者之一而已,等空了再仔细看看。


[Updated, Mar 23] 88张扫完弄完,包含全部的135。接下来弄645的。感觉累了。

自讨苦吃,把连续拍的几张堆上去,色调匹配花了比其他照片多几倍的时间。老婆说,索性就别匹配了;可我又嫌差异太小。


[Updated, Mar 21] 120幅图,扫完了135彩色的60张,修完了其中的50张。新扫描仪,感谢Anyon,新校色流程,感谢Busoni,新的显示器,感谢NEC,稳定的印刷,感谢Magcloud,我只须怀疑自己的排版,不需要担心前后两头——自己的照片和印出来的效果。等全部扫完修完再更新PDF版。


[Mar 12, 2011] 花几个星期初编了一本影集《behind/后面》。很清楚这是一本“厕上书”(coffee table book?),所以编选起来有它轻松的一面——好吧,是从未有过的轻松——几乎不需要顾及单幅照片本身的“质量”,拖过来就往页面里扔。90页,120图。想到正式扫描有点怕了。希望夏天的时候能去印,还是Magcloud,这次用perfect binding。

整理博客后台翻出来草稿,一年多前的事。把其他话都删了,就这个:

搞到个女的,嗯该说是她搞到我。
去她窝:挺美吧,挪威森林!

让我留下,坐哪儿随便,
四下连把椅子都没瞧见。

坐小毯,喝她酒,熬我时间,
聊到两点,她说不早了要睡。

我不上班,磕磕绊绊进浴缸睡觉。

I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me.
She showed me her room, “isn’t it good Norwegian wood?”

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere.
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn’t a chair.

I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine.
We talked until two and then she said: “It’s time for bed.”

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.

又有认识的人在456的影展要开幕了,想到当时我展On Their Sites的事,有两句话印象深刻,沈玮对我说的:现在没人弄那么多字了,也没人看,说到底画面最重要……你可以去看看Sternfeld的On Their Site,可能会有启发……


12月16了,算是过了吧,今年。8月的时候,同事又来鼓励我,提醒我别错过今年的政府基金申请*。就开始用On Their Sites申请,自己弄英文,开始了近两个月断断续续的烦(今天知道有个朋友也有意申请,托英文人去看看申请表,把个英文人吓跑了;应该不是难,是烦)。在不堪其烦,又没有勇气离开电脑的时候,偷玩游戏般地起了投稿的念头,而且觉得投稿操作要容易得多。现在结账,花费$72,接触了近20个杂志和比赛,但没有一个要这东西。至于基金的申请,到最后是连拼写都懒得核就按了提交。前几天通知高中了,还多给了1/5(这也就是政府机构的做派;而被选中,也主要因为作品中的移民因素及其与社区的联系吧)。合约要到一月底签……但愿不会有变卦,Hohoho。从此以后,On Their Sites再也不会在我心里悬着了;它是不是个有意思的作品,这早就定了,是不是别人喜欢,现在看着也基本定了,如果说有什么支出的话,也补回来了,以后的陆续补充,那就当走路捡到钱了。
