MTA’s ‘brownie points’

Union blasts holiday discounts as way to avoid paying workers

UPPER WEST SIDE The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is offering holiday discounts to “win brownie points” with the public, who will soon face fare increases, service cuts and a possible strike, charged Roger Toussaint, president of the Transport Workers Union Local 100, yesterday.
……
“We believe there is a sufficient surplus to resolve our contract and to forestall imposing the fare increases” planned for 2007 and 2009, he said. Ridiculing the spending plans approved at last week’s MTA board meeting, Toussaint added, “They’re basically trying to throw the money out of the window as quickly as possible before Dec. 15.”
……
“The TWU charges are ludicrous,” responded MTA spokesman Tom Kelly. “The MTA proposal to spend the surplus on fare initiatives, service improvements and the $450 million one-time payment to pension funds is a carefully calibrated use of a non-recurring surplus.”

Bronx Man Who Sold Cigarettes Is Shot Dead

By ANTHONY RAMIREZ and JANON FISHER
Published: November 20, 2005

A retiree who sold discount cigarettes to neighbors in an informal cash business he operated out of his Bronx apartment was discovered fatally shot shortly before midnight Friday, the police said yesterday.

The investigation is continuing into the death of the man, Angel Gustavo Jimenez, 71, a retired shop owner originally from the Dominican Republic.

Investigators at the scene said Mr. Jimenez had been found on the kitchen floor with two gunshot wounds in the head. There were no signs of forced entry, they said, and no suspects have been identified.

No gun was found, but two bullet casings were recovered at the scene. While the police said they did not know of a motive for the killing, friends said they had warned Mr. Jimenez about keeping cash in his apartment.

Mr. Jimenez lived in a ground-floor apartment in a 17-story high-rise, part of the Boston Secor Houses, a public housing project in the Baychester section of the Bronx. A walker and wheelchair could be seen in the apartment; Mr. Jimenez had broken his hip, but it had healed poorly, and he walked with a limp.

“Everybody here used to buy cigarettes from him,” said Edwin Ortiz, a friend who helped Mr. Jimenez buy discount cigarettes on the Internet.

Indeed, Mr. Ortiz said he used to chide Mr. Jimenez for selling cigarettes, principally Newports and Marlboros, from a folding table in his apartment, with cash readily visible. Mr. Ortiz said he was a member of “Smoker’s Den,” described on the Internet as an online smoke shop that is part of the Unkechaug Indian Nation of Poospatuck Indians in Mastic, N.Y., on Long Island. Many Indian tribes are legally permitted to sell cigarettes tax-free.

Mr. Jimenez sold cigarette packs for about $5 each, sharply lower than the $7 or more typically charged by retailers. Mr. Ortiz said he bought buy1 10-pack cartons over the Internet at roughly $25 each, and Mr. Jimenez sold them for $50. Mr. Jimenez sold 50 cartons or more every week, Mr. Ortiz said.

Lucila Alvarez, 59, Mr. Jimenez’s home health care aide, was one of the last people to see him alive. She used to take him to a nearby center for physical therapy.

On Thursday, Mr. Jimenez told her that he planned to buy a plane ticket that afternoon for his annual vacation in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, starting Dec. 10 and returning Feb. 10. Mr. Jimenez has two sons and two daughters living there, Ms. Alvarez said.

On Friday morning, Ms. Alvarez, who does not have a key to Mr. Jimenez’s apartment, knocked on his door but heard no response. Mr. Jimenez’s body was found later that evening.

Peacenik Grannies

Nov 17 2005 Published by under Teech Mee Enqlizh

Peacenik grannies go to court

Seventeen anti-war grandmothers who were arrested at a military recruiting station last month pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct yesterday and vowed to keep agitating against the war in Iraq.

“This is an immoral war. We have no business being there,” said Vinie Burrows, a Manhattan actress who declined to give her age but said she has five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. “There were no mass weapons of destruction in Iraq.”

The women — some with canes or walkers — sang “Down by the Riverside” and rallied supporters outside the Midtown Community Court before going inside for their hearing.

They read a statement saying they tried to sign up to serve in Iraq on Oct. 17 “to replace grandchildren who have been deployed there far too long.” They said they wanted to give young service members “the same opportunity for enjoying a long life as we have had.”

About 30 supporters including the street theater troupe Billionaires for Bush chanted “Go Grannies Go!” as the women filed in for their hearing before Judge Eileen Koretz.

The women, who call themselves Grandmothers Against the War and range in age from 49 to 90, were arrested after they tried to enlist and sat down in front of the Times Square recruiting station.
